The ten Qirat are not different styles but involve slight variations in pronunciation, letters, and Harakat. During the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) time, different tribes had distinct dialects, similar to British and American English. The Quran was revealed in multiple dialects to accommodate these linguistic differences.
Evolution of the Ten Qirat The Quran was initially revealed in one dialect, but upon the Prophet’s (PBUH) request, Angel Jibreel (AS) expanded it to seven dialects. This ensured accessibility while maintaining the same meaning.
Ibn ‘Abbaas reported that Jibreel (AS) recited the Quran to the Prophet (PBUH) in one harf, later increasing it to seven. (Sahih Hadith)
‘Ubay ibn Ka’ab narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) requested multiple dialects, and Allah permitted seven.
‘Umar ibn al-Khattab observed differences in recitation and sought clarification from the Prophet (PBUH), who confirmed that the Quran was revealed in multiple ahruf, allowing flexibility.
